Why do we need to be skinny?

Six pack abs, tight butt, lean legs, toned arms. This is the image that the diet and fitness industry is selling us. What does it cost for you to acheive that look, and I’m not talking about money. There is a saying that goes like this; “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”. There is an obsession with wanting to be skinny and models starving themselves to get work and saying just 10 more pounds then I will be good. It’s not just the modeling industry. It’s most of us especially woman. I’ll be happy when I lose 10 pounds. I’ll be happy when I can fit back into my size ___. (whatever size you use to be). I’ll be happy when I find a guy.

The pain of wanting to be skinny vs healthy

This kind of thinking leads to disordered eaitng, loss of menstration, poor health, low energy levels, increased need for medication, incresed mental health issues and lower life expectancy. You need to ask yourself ” WHY do you want to be skinny?” I often here that when I am skinny then I will be happy. Then I can wear the cute clothes. Then I will be healthy. Then I will feel more secure. Then I will be liked and accepted. So why do you need to be skinny? Why not focus on being the healthiest person you can be?

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with being skinny or overweight, and you should just sit on your couch all day and eat chips. I am saying you should be healthy whatever that looks like for you, but don’t obsess about being skinny. That is not healthy.Thinking that your most important goal is to have a flat stomach, or a thigh gap, or no cellulite. The most important goal is a healthy weight for your body. Not your friends body, or the body of someone you admire on social media. You can admire them but don’t obsees trying ot look like them. They are not you.

What is the goal?

The goal is to take care of your body. Aim to the the healthiest version of you that you can be. Let’s change the statement from “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”, to “nothing tastes as good as healthy and happy feels”. Feeling happy and healthy really does taste better than a plate full of brownies, or strarving yourself to try to get there.

Strength, fitness and curves are beautiful. Kindness, self worth, self acceptance, self love is the most beautiful.  So why do you want to be skinny over healthy? Becasue society says that is how we should look. So why do we want the pain of being skinny over healthy? The answer is simple: WE DON’T.
