I am sure all of us have someone that we know who struggles with their mental health. For me, it is a loved one who started struggling in high school. She would probably say it was in elementary school.
Dealing with a loved one with mental health struggles for the last several years, here is what I know.
It has been draining and emotional, hard on our marriage, hard on the family and hard on them. We didn’t see the signs even though, looking back now, I think we did. In high school, it all seemed to fall apart. She couldn’t get out of bed, missed school and was involved with the wrong crowd.
She was at a high risk of not graduating, and she didn’t.
She was experiencing intense meltdowns over the smallest things, and I couldn’t understand what was happening. She was self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. She was self-harming, which got worse and worse.
She was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder. She refused to take medication, didn’t want to go to therapy, and thought there was something else wrong. We ended up sending her to an inpatient program where she was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She felt lost, and so did we. It has been so hard to navigate all this.
Her dad and I started taking group therapy, one-on-one therapy, reading about the disorders and taking courses.
We volunteer with a mental health organization in Canada. These tools on the website are from strategies we have learned to help ourselves and our loved ones. Everyone deserves to feel heard, seen, loved and that they matter.
